As the face of Hennepin County changes, so does its library. To meet the ever-increasing diversity of the population, the Hennepin County Library's Outreach Department employs multicultural liaisons serving the Spanish, Hmong, and Somali communities. These liaisons work directly with library staff and members of the community to provide a wide range of programs, such as:
Learn to use computers at the library. Learn to use Microsoft Word and Excel, the Internet, e-mail, and the library catalog and databases. The classes are free. For information check the current schedule and locations of classes.
English as a Second Language (ESL) adult students practice English conversation weekly on a variety of everyday topics -- shopping, using coupons, voting, taxes, free activities -- plus how to use the library. Participants must speak some English and register for the series in person or by calling the library. For information check the current schedule and locations of classes.
Need to practice and improve your English? Hennepin County Library carries books, audiotapes, and videotapes to help you learn English. The library also carries the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) workbooks and GED study guides, and materials for both adults and children in various languages from around the world. Please ask any reference librarian for help locating these and other materials.
The library helps new immigrant families help their children through resources such as Birth to Six website in Spanish, Good Reads / Libros recomendados for children, Homework Help in Espanol, as well Bilingual Storytimes for children ages 2 and up.
The library provides access to print, non-print, and electronic information to help with immigration questions.
If you are interested in a tour for your group or class, please contact your local library to make arrangements. Tours are available in English, Spanish, Hmong, and Somali. Contact the Outreach Department for more information.
